Houston, TX - On Saturday, May 22nd, Dance Houston will hold its eighth annual City-Wide Dance Festival, showcasing some of the most exciting dancers local to Houston. The event will be held at the Wortham Center in the Cullen Theater and will feature approximately 15 companies and hundreds of Houston-area dancers on one stage. In presenting this popular festival, Dance Houston aims to work with as many local dance companies as possible and is currently in the process of hand picking the groups for this year’s program. Groups presented in the past include Dominic Walsh Dance Theater, Houston Metropolitan Dance Company, Revolve Dance Company, Houston Ballet II, Dance of Asian America,  HIStory, Urban Souls Dance Company, Compania Folklorica Alegria Mexicana, Planet Funk, Barbara King Dance Company, Wyld Styl, Ad Deum Dance Company, and Anjali Dance Company as well as many others. This annual showcase features Houston’s leading dance organizations and focuses on presenting traditional and innovative performances in hip hop, ballroom, contemporary and cultural styles. The mission of Dance Houston is to increase dance appreciation by raising awareness for dance in and around Houston and making dance more accessible to Houston patrons.

“We want people to see that their unique backgrounds make a significant contribution to today’s culture”, says Andrea Cody, Founder and Executive Director of Dance Houston. Cody was inspired by a dance festival in Chicago that unites the local dancers together and allows the community to catch them all in one place. She wanted to give Houston the same chance to see its dance community come together in a festival that was appealing, culturally relevant, fun and affordable. Throughout the year, Dance Houston presents high quality festivals featuring Houston’s favorite dancers and companies. The City-Wide Dance Festival continues to be the biggest and most popular event presented by Dance Houston. Tickets range from $15-$44.50 and are available at www.dancehouston.org. Curtain at 8pm.
